Tessy Thomas, known as the 'Missile Woman' of India is the Director General of Aeronautical Systems and the former Project Director for Agni-IV missile in Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). She is the first woman scientist to head a missile project in India.

The 56-year-old has a doctorate in missile guidance and has worked in the field for over three decades. She has contributed to guidance, trajectory simulation, and mission design at the DRDO. She designed the guidance scheme for long-range missile systems, which is used in all Agni missiles. She was conferred with Agni Self-reliance award in 2001. She is a recipient of multiple fellowships and honorary doctorates.

Thomas has four other sisters and one brother. Recalling her early childhood life, Thomas is always grateful for her parents ensuring their children received a proper education. She remembers her parents encouraged the six siblings to pursue careers of their own interest so that they can stay motivated and keep going. Thomas grew up near Thumba Rocket Launching Station, and her fascination with the wonderment of aircraft flying began at an early age. Remembering her parents’ words, Thomas decided to pursue a career in science.

However, when Thomas was 13, her father suffered from a stroke that left his right side paralyzed. Her mother, who was a teacher before, had to remain a homemaker to take care of the family in such dire conditions.

“It must have been tough for my mother — who was not allowed to work — to look after us on her own.” Thomas credited her mother in one of her interviews for her achievements, “Yet she made sure each of her five daughters and one son had a good education.... I’ve inherited her strong will for sure. I am equally persevering and determined like my mother.
